The Arcade Haggis & Whisky House skateboard was one of the series of skateboard designs featuring our incorruptible listings that our co-founder Andrew Burnett did as part of the 30 day #FuturPopArt challenge.

We are going to do a post per day, following the same order as Andrew’s designs did for the challenge, the idea is to both showcase the designs beyond Instagram, and to give some insight into why the designs and what they meant to Andrew as he did them.

Clearly, as polarising as they may be, Haggis and Whisky are two of Scotland’s greatest culinary delights and the top of the deck design reflects the three constituent parts of any proper haggis dinner; haggis, neeps and tatties!

The bottom of the deck is dedicated to the logo, the iconic chalkboard outside and, of course, the whisky!

Andrew said:

As much as the Arcade is called the “Haggis and Whisky House” I felt that neeps and tatties were coming up short in my initial designs, so I included the holy trinity of Scottish staples on the top of the board. The pink colour came about when I was blending the colours on the back of the board and it “POPPED!” so, given that the challenge I was taking part in was a PopArt Challenge, I kept it.

We don’t know exactly how many whiskies Andrew poured to decide on the colours that he did, but it certainly is striking.

The Arcade Haggis And Whisky House is one of our incorruptible Edinburgh reviews and one of the best places in Edinburgh to decide whether haggis is for you or not – they also do a vegetarian version.

The top of the deck has the TopTipEDI logo sandwiched in the middle between the grip tape at front and back, while the underside is composed of elements of the Milkman’s iconic signage.

The metal light sign above the door has a clean, crisp and modern sans-serif sharpness to it while the hand painted signage of yore is a much more script like affair and is showing the effects of weather and having been painted over for so many decades. The textures of both made interesting blends as the colours of the wood grain shone through the wood with experimentation in Photoshop’s blending modes resulting in something that is both instantly recognisable and yet has never before been seen.

Andrew said:

“One of my favourite things about the Milkman’s frontage is the number 7 which is really understated, I chose it to be the biggest but lightest element on this deck”

The Milkman is one of our Incorruptible recommendations and one of Edinburgh’s very best and most loved coffeeshops.

In June, one of our founders, Andrew Burnett designed a series of skateboards as part of a design challenge. The challenge involved creating a skateboard design every day for the 30 days of June, so, Andrew selected 29 of the businesses listed on TopTipEDI for these designs and also did one on TopTipEDI itself.

The above design is the one he did for TopTipEDI. It features the core concept of “incorruptible” which is at the heart of TopTipEDI. The lower case i of Incorruptible is in blue to show that TopTipEdi is all about information, while the underside features the logo and the backdrop of two iconic Edinburgh landmarks; the Castle and the National Monument as shot by Scott Liddell before being stylised by Andrew.

In the coming month we will do a series of posts about the skateboards and the businesses they’re based on, we hope you like them as much as we do!
