Lovecrumbs is an independent cafe and cake shop in Edinburgh’s West Port.

Why Lovecrumbs?

A few minutes walk away from the busy Grassmarket is the quirky Lovecrumbs. The cafe sell and serve amazing, tasty and pretty cakes and other bakes such a scones, alongside great coffee.

The many different daily changing cake options comprise of such flavourful combinations like lemon and thyme, pear, chocolate and hazelnut, carrot and walnut, blueberry violet, or chocolate orange, but also classics like bakewell tarts and Victoria sponge. The slices are generous, and so is the frosting.

For smaller bites, though hardly less calorific, there may be scrumptious brownies, millionaire’s shortbread, tray bakes, and small tarts to choose from.

The coffee is very nice, and all sorts of coffee specialities are available (£2.70 for a flat white), even iced for a hot day. Plant-based milks can be opted for at an extra charge. When ordering from the selection of teas, staff usually offer to bring a thermos flask with hot water to top up the teapot with, which is a great idea and extends the lifespan of the leafy goodness.

Tap water is available from carafes, and other refreshing soft drinks like bottled iced tea are also on offer.

Savoury options include salads and open sandwiches like a salmon one, but there is less choice than for sweet treats.

The interior is mix and match, consisting of wooden tables and chairs. The atmosphere is casual. For those who like it quite sociable, some of the larger tables will often have to be shared with others as it tends to get busy. There are even seats in the window (yes, actual window seats), where you would otherwise find a window display. The clientele is a mix of students, professionals out for a bite to eat on their lunch break, and friends having a catch-up.

Orders are placed at the till, where some gifts, small homewares, stationery items, tote bags, keep cups, and fresh bread can also be purchased.

Lovecrumbs’ opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm (Sat from 9:30, Sun from 12pm). A casual place and an excellent choice for both coffee and cake, the cafe is a nice spot when coming from a walk in the Meadows, the Tollcross area, or from having explored the Grassmarket.
